Bimbola Akinbola is an interdisciplinary scholar and artist based in Chicago. Working at the intersection of diaspora studies and visual and performance art, her work is concerned with black bodies in leisure, the complicated and nagging nature of belonging, queer worldmaking, and African diasporic nostalgia.

Akinbola has a PhD in American Studies from the University of Maryland, and is currently the 2018-2020 Black Performing Arts Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern University where she is working on her first book manuscript. The project examines the creative work of contemporary Nigerian diasporic women artists whose work, she argues, strategically utilizes disbelonging as a critical tool and strategy for queer worldmaking.
